The British youth fiction writer Jenny Valentine is touring the world to talk to teenagers in various countries to find out what matters most to them. Fernando “Nando” López is a novelist, playwright and author of several works of children’s and young adult fiction, including Los nombres del fuego and La edad de la ira. His play #malditos16 examines suicide, anorexia and self-harm, and is inspired by his work as a volunteer at a hospital, where he runs literary workshops with teenagers who have tried to take their own lives. Both will talk to the publisher and writer Carlos Sánchez Lozano about worrying, the imagination and what it means to be a teenager in the 21^st century.

He also produced one of the first e-books for iPhone and is currently visiting lecturer at the Oxford Brookes International Centre for Publishing as well as writer in residence at DeepMind. Carmen Boullosa is a Mexican novelist, poet, playwright and essayist, author of the novel Texas: The Great Theft and, together with Mike Wallace, of the non-fiction work A Narco History: How the United States and Mexico Jointly Created the “Mexican Drug War”. The writer Edurne Portela’s most recent works are El eco de los disparos: Cultura y memoria de la violencia, a non-fiction book about the armed group ETA’s disarmament, and the novel Mejor la ausencia. The two will talk about the scars of armed violence with the Colombian writer Giuseppe Caputo.

Detective novels

La segunda amante del rey, the latest novel by Herralde Novel prizewinner, Alonso Cueto, is both a love story and a detective novel that takes the reader into the depths of the genre. After the enormous success of her first novels (1997 Lumen Prize for best Spanish woman writer), Alicia Giménez began writing full time. In 2015 she published, with success, the novel Crímenes que no olvidaré, which consolidated her position as one of the most popular voices in detective writing. Carlos Zanón, author of No llames a casa (2012 Valencia Negra Prize for the Best Detective Novel of the Year) and Yo fui Johnny Thunders (2014 Salamanca Negra, 2015 Novelpol and 2015 Dashiell Hammett prizes), has just published Taxi, a moving novel set in Barcelona. The three writers will talk about their novels and the beauty of the genre with the publisher Ana Gavín.

Renato Cisneros is a journalist, poet and fiction writer. La distancia que nos separa, a book that also gave rise to his latest novel, Dejarás la tierra, is based on the search for the man who was Cisneros’ own father before he was born. As the author says, “it is the story of a son who is searching for his place in the world by remembering his father”, General “Gaucho” Cisneros. The philosopher Javier Gomá is the author of the Tetralogía de la ejemplaridad and the monologue Inconsolable, about the unexpected desolation he suffered after the death of his father. The text, which has also been adapted into a play, is the interpretation of a number of situations in which the author experienced mortality and death. The two will talk to the writer Margarita Valencia.

RCN â?? National Ministry of Education National Short Story Competition Prize Ceremony

More than 320,000 stories by Colombian students have been received during the 11 years of the National Short Story Competition, run jointly by RCN and the Ministry of Education. This has allowed many thousands of children and young adults to express their emotions, experiences, fantasies and fears through writing. The winners of the 11^th competition will read the stories that they wrote for this contest.

Gender equality is men´s business too

Boys, teenagers and young men play an important role in overcoming gender violence and discrimination. Men still have power at many levels and so have the opportunity to promote changes in places and structures where women have not yet been able to access and participate. Working with women of all ages to challenge and reduce inequality is essential, but insufficient. Policies and programmes will transform gender relationships if they also help boys and men face up to unequal power relations and if we work with them as allies in achieving social equality and gender justice. A number of young people talk about their experiences.

When Ignacio Castillo drew up the budget for filming El Inca, he had to bear in mind that in Venezuela the prices of certain things, food for example, go up every week. However, the challenges of this film, the tragic love story of the world champion boxer Edwin Valero, did not end there since a judge banned the film in the country after a legal challenge presented by the Valero family. Apart from this, the film, nominated for an Oscar, has been a success. This film’s plot and characters breathe intensity. After opening at the Miami Film Festival, it comes to the Hay Festival Cartagena, where it will be presented by its director.

With more than thirty million books sold and translations into over forty languages, Marc Levy is the most read French author. Myths of colonization

A myth exists because it helps to justify its own existence. So, it is worth asking, what happens if we are justifying mediocrity? Enrique Serrano recently published the non-fiction ¿Por qué fracasa Colombia?, which was a bestselling book in 2016. In it, he argues that Colombia is an adolescent nation, which still does not know what it wants to be when it grows up. In part, not knowing itself comes from an erroneous reading of history, particularly the colonial period. Juan Esteban Constaín, the writer and journalist, has built a literary edifice in which history can be read as a piece of fiction. The two will talk about the myths and realities of colonization with Juan Merino.

Carlo Feltrinelli in conversation with Mario Jursich

Carlo Feltrinelli’s father founded the publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli after the Second World War, just after he became a communist spy. Originally, the publishing house was a bookshop that documented the history of the worker’s movement in Italy and the world. However, at the same time, the company published writers such as Lampedusa, Borges, Kerouac, Pasternak and García Márquez. Carlo Feltrinelli tells this intricate and exciting history of intellectual struggle in his book Senior Service, and will talk about it to the writer and founder and former editor of the magazine El malpensante, Mario Jursich.

Art changes the world

Fernando Montaño and Suricato come to Cartagena to offer a show that overflows with dance and music, with influences from both urban and classical music. This performance is a project that is unprecedented in terms of both the Colombian and the international scene. The show features the Buenaventura ballet dancer and soloist with the Royal Ballet in London, Fernando Montaño, who has been praised as one of the world’s best classical dancers; and Suricato, a “Colombia brand artist”, member of the Portafolio de la Cancillería and one of the major figures of the Colombian New Music movement.

Javier Gomá is a Spanish writer of both fiction and non-fiction, author of the Tetralogía de la ejemplaridad and Filosofía mundana, in which he explains that in today’s world the mission of philosophy is to make itself ‘worldly’: philosophy about, but also for, the whole world. In his book, La imagen de tu vida, he proposes using existence to build up a lasting example and also invites us to live a dignified and beautiful life, one in which we can feel the sublime nature of existence, as against the nihilism that has been appropriated from culture in today’s mass society. Nadya Tolokonnikova in conversation with Luke Harding

The journalist interviews the musician and activist, Nadya Tolokonnikova (Russia), a member of the punk group Pussy Riot and arrested together with her fellow bandmembers in 2012 because of a performance in Moscow Cathedral. Tolokno was sentenced for crimes of religious hatred and spent two years in jail, a sentence that became a symbol around the world for the Vladimir Putin government’s attitude to freedom of expression. She currently lives in Moscow and continues to work as a human rights activist. In 2017 Nadya Tolokonnikova was selected as part of the Hay30, which, supported by the CASE Foundation, celebrates a new generation of thinkers and activists.

The author, translator, linguist and literary critic, is without a doubt one of South Africa’s most important writers. Winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature, his novels, which are often allegorical or symbolic, question the narratives of multiculturalism. Few contemporary writers have managed to balance the claims of social justice with the aesthetic and technical demands of the novel in the way Coetzee has. He will talk to the publisher Soledad Costantini about the literatures of the South.

The last book by Beatriz Helena Robledo, María Cano: La Virgen Roja, portrays the life of a woman of libertarian spirit and who was ahead of her time â??the 1920s, with its climate of revolution and protestâ?? yet who was also a leader. Robledo is a fiction and essay writer, and lectures at the Universidad Javeriana. With this biography, she leaves children’s and young adult literature to show us a woman and a period full of contradictions, where the first signs of progress were accompanied by political sectarianism and violence. Carlos Sánchez is a lecturer, essayist, literary critic and editor.

José Alejandro Restrepo in conversation with Juan David Correa

José Alejandro Restrepo is one of the most consolidated creators of national contemporary art. During his studies in the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris he had personal contact with thinkers such as Deleuze and Foucault, became interested in their approaches and discovered the work of emblematic video artists such as Bill Viola and Gary Hill, who asserted his interest in video instalations as the proper means for his research. Since 1988 he has become a pioneer using this technique in Colombia. His work´s second basic aspect is the profound investigation he carries out into national history. He displays his works regularly throughout Europe, Latin America and the US.

The journalist Marta Orrantia, author of Mañana no te presentes, will talk to the US writer Jonathan Levi and the great Colombian musician Chucho Merchán. The most recent of Levi’s novels, Septimania, described by A. B. Yehoshua as “a love story, a kingdom, a novel of wild and rich imagination,” has recently been translated into Spanish. The work, praised as a “great fictional feat” by Juan Gabriel Vásquez, is set in Rome and Cambridge, UK, where, in the late 1970s, Levi co-founded Granta magazine and created the jazz fusion band Antares with Chucho Merchán. This will be the first time in almost forty years that Levi and Merchán meet to talk about England, love and music, and to play a Septimania song.

For the Spanish neurologist, Jordi Montero, who in 2017 published the book Permiso para quejarse, what is behind chronic pain is emotion. Two masters of creative non-fiction will talk about the attractions of their genre. Héctor Abad has published books such as Oblivion: A Memoir, which tells the story of his father, the doctor Héctor Abad Gómez, and the circumstances of his murder, as well as works of fiction such as The Farm. A regular columnist, Guerriero has also published outstanding works such as Los suicidas del fin del mundo and A Simple Story. In 2013 she received the González-Ruano Journalism Prize, granted by the Mapfre Foundation.

The singer and actor Ana Belén is one of Spain’s outstanding cultural figures, with an artistic career that includes over forty films, around thirty plays and over thirty-five albums. Winner in 2015 of a Latin Grammy for Musical Excellence, the Spanish Film Academy awarded her the 2017 Honorary Goya for being “a paramount figure for generations, whose face and voice play a central role within our filmography”. She will talk about her acting career with Luis Alegre.

Alonso Salazar, former Mayor of Medellin, has published a number of books on the reality of Colombia, especially in terms of understanding the phenomenon of drug trafficking and its sickly hold on society. No nacimos pa´semilla (1990), La parábola de Pablo (2001) and Profeta en el desierto: Vida y muerte de Luis Carlos Galán (2003) are his most important books. He will talk to the writer Mario Jursich about his most recent book, No hubo fiesta, in which the author draws intimate portraits of the main figures in the war, including Bateman, Pizarro, Marulanda, Iván Ríos and Carlos Castaño.

What does it mean to be corroncho? If it means someone ordinary, without broad horizons, or who dresses in an outlandish matter, then can a corroncho not also be someone who lives in the coastal region? Hernán “El Corroncho” Villa has been advocating corronchismo for fifty years, and has become its ideologue. He also wrote the classic porro, El Corroncho, which Alfredo Gutiérrez recorded in 1980. He is a cultural investigator and has his own definition of the word: a corroncho is an honest, distinguished, cheerful and friendly person. This multi-talented minstrel, winner of a Latin Grammy in 2012, will talk to the corronchólogos Daniel Samper Pizano and Juan Gossaín. The discussion will be accompanied by box drum, guacharaca and accordion.

Lee Maracle is a member of the Stó:lo nation whose territory is located in Canada. She is a poet and the author of a number of novels, short stories and non-fiction books in which her culture and traditions are represented. In 2016 she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her work promoting writing among young aboriginals. In a conversation chaired by the journalist and researcher Ingrid Bejerman, Maracle will talk to Miguel Rocha Vivas about indigenous rights and traditions.
