Renato Cisneros and Javier Gomá in conversation with Margarita Valencia

Renato Cisneros is a journalist, poet and fiction writer. La distancia que nos separa, a book that also gave rise to his latest novel, Dejarás la tierra, is based on the search for the man who was Cisneros’ own father before he was born. As the author says, “it is the story of a son who is searching for his place in the world by remembering his father”, General “Gaucho” Cisneros. The philosopher Javier Gomá is the author of the Tetralogía de la ejemplaridad and the monologue Inconsolable, about the unexpected desolation he suffered after the death of his father. The text, which has also been adapted into a play, is the interpretation of a number of situations in which the author experienced mortality and death. Gender equality is men´s business too

Boys, teenagers and young men play an important role in overcoming gender violence and discrimination. Men still have power at many levels and so have the opportunity to promote changes in places and structures where women have not yet been able to access and participate. Working with women of all ages to challenge and reduce inequality is essential, but insufficient. Policies and programmes will transform gender relationships if they also help boys and men face up to unequal power relations and if we work with them as allies in achieving social equality and gender justice. A number of young people talk about their experiences.

Film presented by Ignacio Castillo

When Ignacio Castillo drew up the budget for filming El Inca, he had to bear in mind that in Venezuela the prices of certain things, food for example, go up every week. However, the challenges of this film, the tragic love story of the world champion boxer Edwin Valero, did not end there since a judge banned the film in the country after a legal challenge presented by the Valero family. Apart from this, the film, nominated for an Oscar, has been a success. This film’s plot and characters breathe intensity. After opening at the Miami Film Festival, it comes to the Hay Festival Cartagena, where it will be presented by its director.

Letâ??s talk about stories

Although publishers seem to be convinced that there is not the same demand for short stories as for novels or self-help books, the genre often sparks the beginnings of a passion for books, and also acts as a school for most writers. From the brothers Grimm to Edgar Allan Poe, from Borges, who did not believe in the novel, to Cortázar, who said that the novel won by points but the short story was capable of a knockout, short fiction is full of gems. The Spanish writers Eloy Tizón and Pilar Adón will talk to Guido Tamayo about some of them.

What makes a woman a good mother? Is it necessary to give up your own dreams, however extreme they are, when you have children? Clare Weiskopf, the film’s director, was 11 when her mother fled to the Colombian jungle, abandoning her and her little brother. Thirty years later, Weiskopf became pregnant and decided to look for her mother in order to find answers and heal scars. She needed to have her own concept of the meaning of motherhood. Erling Kagge in conversation with Gabrielle Walker

On Silence

Traffic noise, mobile phone alerts and even the hum of our own thoughts... silence seems unachievable. Yet what is it really? Where can it be found? Why is it more important now than ever before? In his book Silence: In the Age of Noise, the Norwegian adventurer and publisher Erling Kagge explores the importance of isolating oneself from the world based on his personal experience and the ideas of classical and modern philosophers, writers and artists. Because silence does not necessarily mean “absence of noise”. It is within reach of everyone, anywhere: we can experience perfect calm in the middle of a desert, but also in the shower or on the dancefloor.

Cervantes and Shakespeare are alive and well. In many ways, Cervantes was the creator of the modern novel, while television dramas and film still use dramatic formulas created by Shakespeare. Salman Rushdie is the author of such well-known books as The Satanic Verses, Midnight’s Children and Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-eight Nights. Carmen Boullosa is a Mexican novelist, poet, playwright and essayist, author of the novels Las paredes hablan, Texas: The Great Theft and La otra mano de Lepanto, among others. They will talk about two of the most important writers of all time, and what they mean to the present.

David Rieff in conversation with Rodrigo Pardo

In praise of forgetting

Saying that the past should not be forgotten has become a mantra, especially in contexts of political transition. However, if it is painful and counterproductive, should we still hold on to the past? In his latest book In Praise of Forgetting, the writer and journalist David Rieff questions the way in which peoples tend to relate to the past. The articles of Rieff, an expert on immigration, international conflicts and humanitarianism, appear in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, El País and other publications. He will talk to the journalist, academic and diplomat Rodrigo Pardo.

Enrique Serrano and Juan Esteban Constaín in conversation with Juan Merino

Myths of colonization

A myth exists because it helps to justify its own existence. So, it is worth asking, what happens if we are justifying mediocrity? Enrique Serrano recently published the non-fiction ¿Por qué fracasa Colombia?, which was a bestselling book in 2016. In it, he argues that Colombia is an adolescent nation, which still does not know what it wants to be when it grows up. In part, not knowing itself comes from an erroneous reading of history, particularly the colonial period. Juan Esteban Constaín, the writer and journalist, has built a literary edifice in which history can be read as a piece of fiction. The two will talk about the myths and realities of colonization with Juan Merino.

Carlo Feltrinelli’s father founded the publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli after the Second World War, just after he became a communist spy. Originally, the publishing house was a bookshop that documented the history of the worker’s movement in Italy and the world. However, at the same time, the company published writers such as Lampedusa, Borges, Kerouac, Pasternak and García Márquez. Carlo Feltrinelli tells this intricate and exciting history of intellectual struggle in his book Senior Service, and will talk about it to the writer and founder and former editor of the magazine El malpensante, Mario Jursich.

What is philosophy for? Javier Gomá in conversation with Winston Manrique

<locale name=\"es-ES\">Cuentos memorables</locale>

Javier Gomá is a Spanish writer of both fiction and non-fiction, author of the Tetralogía de la ejemplaridad and Filosofía mundana, in which he explains that in today’s world the mission of philosophy is to make itself ‘worldly’: philosophy about, but also for, the whole world. In his book, La imagen de tu vida, he proposes using existence to build up a lasting example and also invites us to live a dignified and beautiful life, one in which we can feel the sublime nature of existence, as against the nihilism that has been appropriated from culture in today’s mass society. He will talk to the journalist Winston Manrique.

Although between the times of Benny Moré and “Cachaíto” López and our own days many new influences have entered into the island’s music, Cuba continues to export an essentially Cuban sound. The journalist and writer Juan Gossaín carries out research into the Caribbean spirit; William Navarrete is a Cuban poet, writer and art critic who now lives in France; and Haydée Milanés is one of the best-known Cuban singers today.

Jordi Montero in conversation with Hassan Nassar

For the Spanish neurologist, Jordi Montero, who in 2017 published the book Permiso para quejarse, what is behind chronic pain is emotion. We do not take into consideration our own culture when we have physical pain treated, nor do we listen to our own bodies. From a rigorous and optimistic point of view, this doctor has helped us to understand ourselves as humans and our reality, based on neurology and the relationship between the brain and pain. He will talk about these matters with the intellectual and Minister of Health and Social Protection. He will talk with journalist Hassan Nassar.

Daniel Samper Pizano, and Juan Gossaín in conversation with Hernán Villa Ortega

Be corroncho please!

What does it mean to be corroncho? If it means someone ordinary, without broad horizons, or who dresses in an outlandish matter, then can a corroncho not also be someone who lives in the coastal region? Hernán “El Corroncho” Villa has been advocating corronchismo for fifty years, and has become its ideologue. He also wrote the classic porro, El Corroncho, which Alfredo Gutiérrez recorded in 1980. He is a cultural investigator and has his own definition of the word: a corroncho is an honest, distinguished, cheerful and friendly person. This multi-talented minstrel, winner of a Latin Grammy in 2012, will talk to the corronchólogos Daniel Samper Pizano and Juan Gossaín. The discussion will be accompanied by box drum, guacharaca and accordion.
