Manolo Cardona started out in Colombian television with his role in the famous series Padres e hijos. As his career progressed, he played several characters in drug war TV series such as El Cartel, Sin tetas no hay paraíso and Narcos. In 2018 he played Porfirio Rubirosa, part of the inner circle of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, dictator for 31 years of the Dominican Republic. A diplomat, military, politician, spy, and above all, an inveterate seducer, Rubirosa had five wives, as well as a list of lovers who lavished him with extravagant gifts, including a plane. Charla SURA. Carlos Castaño Uribe in conversation with Jesús Ruiz Mantilla

Carlos Castaño Uribe is an anthropologist of the Universidad de los Andes and has a doctorate in American Anthropology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He has stood out for his contributions to public environmental policy of Colombia and Latin America, having taken up the directorate of the System of National Natural Parks for over a decade, the directorate of IDEAM, the directorate of the Secretariat for the Environment of Bogotá and the vice-ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, among other positions. He was one of the expeditionaries who, during the 90s, discovered the mountain range of Chiribiquete, between the departments of Guaviare and Caquetá, nowadays focus of the Amazonian biodiversity and one of the most important findings in cave paintings in the whole continent. Since then, he has worked on the research of this corner of Colombian geography, which, to him, represents the origins of Colombia and the home of the jaguar. He will be in conversation with Jesús Ruiz Mantilla.

The French doctor, diplomat and writer Jean-Christophe Rufin is one of the founders of Doctors without Borders and has held the posts of president of Action Against Hunger and ambassador of France in Senegal and Gambia. As a writer, he has written works as varied as essays on geopolitics and human rights, to historical novels such as The Abyssinian and Brazil Red. He will be talking with professor Nadia Morales about his impressive trajectory as a doctor on humanitarian missions, human rights advocate, and award-winning writer of fiction and non-fiction.

Let's Talk About Colombia

This talk reflects upon contemporary Colombia, contextualized through the gaze of two journalists who have written extensively about the social, political, economic and cultural history of the country. Antonio Caballero, a columnist for the magazine Semana, has worked at the BBC in London, has worked for national and international newspapers and magazines such as The Economist, Cambio 16, Alternativa, El Tiempo, El Espectador and Diario 16, and has published, among other books, Historia de Colombia y sus oligarquías (2018). Enrique Santos Calderón was an author for forty years of the column Contraescape, of El Tiempo, a magazine he directed for a decade. A close witness of the political life of the country, in 2018 he published a book that is an account of over seventy years of life in Colombia, El país que me tocó, his autobiography. They will be in conversation with the journalist María Jimena Duzán.

Three great classics

Three great Colombian children’s literature authors talk about the importance and challenges of writing for children. Pilar Lozano is author of a long list of kids’ books that cover subjects such as the history of Colombia. Her latest book is La historia, los viajes y la abuela, whilst her most well-known work is, without a doubt, Colombia, mi abuelo y yo. Celso Román’s background is as a veterinary doctor and visual artist before he began writing for younger readers. His oeuvre includes 60 titles of children’s books, several of them touching upon the subject of nature and looking after the environment in books such as El árbol de los tucanes (2011), Rogelio y la bolsa (2013) and Hijos de Madre Tierra (2017). He won the Enka Award with Los amigos del hombre. Irene Vasco has written some thirty books, among them titles such as A veces (2005), Medalla de honor (2006), Lugares fantásticos de Colombia (2007), La independencia de Colombia: Así fue (2009), Mambrú perdió la guerra (2012) and Letras al carbón (2015). War and peace, readings of the Colombian conflict

The journalist Patricia Lara is the author of Adiós a la guerra. Una historia breve de los conflictos en Colombia, a book that transcends the nature of Colombia’s internal conflict in its current state, going back to the wars of the 19th century, contextualizing them from the origin of the transition to be a republic today. The current president of the Truth Commission, Francisco de Roux, is a Jesuit priest who has dedicated his life to the cause of peace in Colombia. In 2018 he published La audacia de la paz imperfecta, in which he talks about his experiences as a mediator in the armed conflict, as a target both for guerillas and paramilitaries, about the year that followed the signature of the agreements, and the visit of Pope Francis to Colombia. They will be in conversation with the journalist Juan Carlos Pérez in a talk which is an invitation to peace.

Venezuela, Nicaragua and Brazil are three of the countries on Latin America where working as a journalist has become a real challenge to laws and repressive actions of their governments over the past year. Luz Mely Reyes (Venezuela), director and founder of Efecto Cocuyo; Natalia Viana (Brazil), director and founder of the Public Agency of Research Journalism; and Sabrina Duque (Ecuador), a journalist based in Nicaragua and author of the book VolcáNica, crónicas desde un país en erupción, will talk with Jaime Abello Banfi (Colombia), general director of the Gabriel García Márquez Foundation for New Ibero-American Journalism (FNPI) about the challenges of news coverage in these contexts.

Deirdre McCloskey in conversation with Alejandro Gaviria

How ideas enriched the world.

Distinguished professor of Economics, History, English and Communication at the University of Illinois in Chicago since the year 2000, and Harvard graduate in Economics, Deirdre McCloskey has written 17 books and over 400 articles on economic theory, economic history, philosophy, rhetoric, feminism, ethics and law. In her work she has covered subjects such as the economic “failure” in the UK in the 19th century, the economic growth in the 19th century, agriculture in the Middle Ages, the gold standard, capitalism, free exchange and the industrial revolution. Since 2007 she has received 7 doctorates honoris causa. Her latest book, Bourgeois Equality: How Ideas, Not Capital or Institutions, Enriched the World, is a study on the social and economic history of Europe. She will talk about how ideas enriched the world with the economist Alejandro Gaviria.

Azriel Bibliowicz, Jorge Franco and Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez in conversation with Esteban Carlos Mejía

Returning to the origins.

In his work, the sociologist and writer Azriel Bibliowicz has explored, especially in the novel Migas de pan, part of his family identity: his parents were Jewish migrants who escaped the Holocaust. Jorge Franco narrates his native Medellín in books such as Rosario Tijeras, El mundo de afuera and his most recent work, El cielo a tiros. Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez (Venezuela / España), is a Phd in Hispanic Literature Literature by the University of Salamanca, and is the autor of more tan 20 books including novels, short stories and essays, receiving in 2013 the Book of the Year Award in Venezuela for Arena negra. His most recent book is La ola detenida. They will be in conversation with the writer Esteban Carlos Mejía about narrating their origins.

Mario Mendoza and Keco Olano in conversation with David Lara

Illustrated Satan: letter and figure.

Mario Mendoza’s classic is reinvented in 2018 in the format of a graphic novel. It is Satanás (Premio Biblioteca Breve, 2002), the novel in which Mendoza reconstructs, through the interlinked stories of four characters, the massacre of Pozzetto, in which a veteran of the Vietnam War murdered thirty people in a restaurant in Bogotá. The narrative is based on the facts that took pace on the 4th of December 1986. Mendoza offers, in the images of the Colombian illustrator Keco Olano, a new representation of those tumultuous events and a commemoration of a tragedy that is difficult to forget. As a performance of resistance against the regime of Pinochet, Eltit read an extract of Lumpérica, her first novel in a brothel, reprinted in Colombia in 2018. Patricia Lara (Colombia) dedicated herself to journalism and fiction in a country where violence became the main topic of inspiration for intellectuals; in 2015 she published Las mujeres en la guerra, a collection of reportage on 10 women who were immersed in the internal conflict in Colombia, and in 2018 Adiós a la guerra. Una historia breve de los conflictos en Colombia, which summarizes in simple words the very long struggle experienced in the country. The writer Laura Restrepo (Colombia) worked in the Peace Commission negotiating between the government of Belisario Betancur and the M-19 in the 80s. She lived for five years in exile when the written testimony of these experiences, Historia de un entusiasmo, caused her to receive death threats. These women will be in conversation with Marta Orrantia on how they have used writing as a tool of dissent.

At age 18, Rawi Hage emigrated from his native Lebanon to New York, where he lived for six years before moving to Montreal, Canada. There he published his first book, De Niro's Game, an instant success. In his latest novel, Beirut Hellfire Society, Hage situates the reader in the Lebanon of the 70s, in the throes a civil war. There, a young man is called to be a member of an antireligious sect that is in charge of giving a dignified burial to all of those rejected by the regime: homosexuals, atheists and marginals. Oscillating between tragedy and comedy, the book pushes towards the contemplation of what living a war is. Pablo Montoya tells a story about the Tunja of the 80s in his book La escuela de música. With the works of Beethoven, Berlioz and Theodorakis as melodies that emanate from the pages, Montoya builds a novel with autobiographical shades on how music students that lived during a time in which violence in the heart of Colombia was inescapable. Considered as the prodigy of Romanian letters of his generation and winner of the Formentor award in 2018, Mircea Cartarescu develops his work in verse, prose, fiction, memoirs and essay, between the epic, fantastic and lyric narrative. He is the author of more than 20 books of poetry, novels and essay collections, among them his renowned volume Solenoide, and the trilogy Cegador, a masterpiece that earned him international repute. Latin America is and has historically been a region of migrants, in which the movement of people for economic and cyclical reasons has been a constant. Ángela Posada Swafford has been writing for 30 years for non-specialist audiences on subjects of science, among many others, astronomy, astronautics, paleontology, geology, oceanography, genetics, the environment, biodiversity, evolution, archaeology and astrophysics. A member of the First Colombian Scientific Expedition to the Antarctic, she will talk with Ana Maria Cano about her latest book Hielo: bitácora de una expedicionaria antártica, which collects her six expeditions to the Antarctic continent as a scientific journalist. It is a book-diary filled with photos and objects collected in the Antarctic, isolated moments of philosophical, scientific, environmental, historical and geopolitical reflections; the invisible threads that join the Antarctic with Colombia and the tropics; and our relationship as humans with this continent which is capable of creating obsessions and has in its ice caps the answer to our future.

Hay Festival Book Club - Lectura Fácil by Cristina Morales

Laura Restrepo in conversation with Juan Carlos Pérez

Los Divinos.

Based on a true crime, Laura Restrepo builds Los Divinos, a fictional novel that reveals the brilliant and ostentatious world of the Tutti Frutti, five successful upper class professionals, bound since childhood by an unbreakable pact of friendship. Throughout their lives and their relationships with different women, the ground is laid for the brutal femicide that one of them is going to commit. Both the characters and the situations narrated here are the product of imagination, but the tragedy of the victim is brutally real. The author will talk about this work with the journalist Juan Carlos Pérez.

Sarah Corbett in conversation with Camilo Jiménez Santofimio

Craftivism.

Activism does not have to be big, loud and combative to be effective. This is the premise at the heart of Sarah Corbett’s discourse, who uses the process of handicraft and the completed objects with well-thought out messages to successfully change laws, business policies, hearts and minds. She is an award-winning campaigner, Ashoka Fellow, Creative Director of the global Craftivist Collective and consultant in her unique 'gentle protest' methodology. She is the author of the books A Little Book of Craftivism and How to be a Craftivist: the art of gentle protest. She will be talking about her way of campaigning for change in a sustainable and kind way with Camilo Jiménez Santofimio.

Diamela Eltit in conversation with Giuseppe Caputo

The Chilean writer Diamela Eltit is the winner of the National Literature Prize 2018, the maximum literary award in Chile. In 1983 she published her first novel, Lumpérica, a work that marked a landmark in of resistence as it was created within the context of Pinochet’s dictatorship, when censorship reigned with rigor in all its expressions. In her last book, Sumar, the author narrates the tragedy of capitalist exploitation and what it means for street vendors and many other citizens. In conversation with the writer Giuseppe Caputo.

The Afro-Caribbean Kitchen Pantry.

The gastronomy, cuisine and Gastronomy, cuisine and food culture configure the imaginaries of a region with climatic and geographic similarities, such as the Afro-Caribbean, beyond concrete frontiers established between Colombia and Venezuela. Rafael Cartay (Venezuela), a theorist of Venezuelan gastronomy and author of the book La despensa de la cocina afrocaribeña and Leonor Espinosa (Colombia), a chef awarded with the Basque Culinary World Prize 2017, for helping indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities to empower their gastronomic traditions as a social and economic motor, will converse with the Colombian editor Mario Jursich on the relationship between identity, land and gastronomy.

Those boom years.

Xavi Ayén (Spain) is a journalist and writer who works for the newspaper La Vanguardia of Barcelona. He has interviewed 23 Nobel Literature Prizes around the world. In 2014 he published Aquellos años del boom: García Márquez, Vargas Llosa y el grupo de amigos que lo cambiaron todo, a book that travels to the sixties and seventies, when García Márquez, Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, Julio Cortázar and José Donoso, by the hand of literary agent Carmen Balcells, revolutionized the history of literature in the West, capturing for the first time massive attention on Latin America. The book has just been republished with new material taken from “those things you’re only allowed to tell after I’m dead”, according to when Balcells told him, and new trips around Colombia, where he has interviewed the siblings and other relatives of García Márquez. Revelations that affect the punch that distanced García Márquez from Vargas Llosa, the illnesses that Gabo or Cortázar suffered in the last years of their lives, and the manoeuvres and shadow sides of the awards and publishing contracts. He will be in conversation with Santiago Gamboa.

Sarah Churchwell in conversation with Dylan Moore

The American Dream.

Sarah Churchwell is professor of American Literature and Public Understanding of the Humanities at the University of London. In her latest book, Behold, America: A history of America First and the American Dream the author approaches two terms that are historically and symbolically loaded for the United States, Latin America and the rest of the world: the “American dream” and “America first”. The origin of these terms, one of them rooted in ideals of progress and equality during times of prosperity and optimism, and the other, a phrase coined by the Ku Klux Klan in their extermination campaign, as well as their shift in meaning based on the current campaign of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, constitute the guiding thread of this text. In conversation with Dylan Moore, here is the United States of America today. Event presented by Catherine Eccles, representing the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library.

The Spanish artist Paula Bonet explores in her work the music, literature, film and visual arts through poetry and prose, the written word and illustrated image. Tiempo de tormentas is the autobiographic novel of Boris Izaguirre (Venezuela), whose story transpires between one of his earliest memories, the earthquake of Caracas in 1967, when he was two years old, to the death of his mother, the renown ballerina Belén Lobo. His family life, homosexuality, political situation of Venezuela, his relationship with sports and art, love, his life in Spain and the importance of the painting that hung for years in his family home, Tiempo de tormentas, are subjects explored in the most recent work of the author. The Hay Diálogos con Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos project aims to boost knowledge and exchange among writers of different generations and nationalities, united by a single language and a literary tradition enriched by authors of varied origins. The project consists of an established author mentoring a younger one from the other side of the Atlantic. In this case, Manuel Vilas (España) will select Giuseppe Caputo (Colombia), author of Un Mundo Huérfano. This is a dialogue that builds bridges across generations and between countries, with a single literary tradition, the Spanish-speaking one, that acts as a shared language.

This will be a conversation between songs that will speak about the life and trajectory of the singer and teacher Totó La Momposina, and the singer and composer Mónica Giraldo. In the musical representation, Totó will be accompanied by her son Marco Vinicio Oyaga, percussionist and music director of her group and Mónica by the bass player Diego Valdés and by the dancer Roiber Jiménez Fuentes.
